Cape Town – The National, Education, Health and Allied Worker’s Union (Nehawu) came out in support of a proposal for lifestyle audits in the government sector on Tuesday.
At its recent National General Council the ANC called for the intensification of the fight against corruption in the public and private sectors.
“The proposal that government should conduct lifestyle audits for all employees of the state and its related entities has the support of our union,” Nehawu said in a statement.
According to Nehawu there should be a focus on senior public servants.
“It is obvious that most of those, who are susceptible to corruption within the public service, are those placed in strategic positions tasked with decision taking responsibilities,” it said.
Nehawu said the move should also be extended to the private sector.
“The sector cannot be absolved from corruption tendencies and we are convinced that it accounts for more corruption, which is mostly concealed from the public,” it said.
The ANC’s three-day policy forum took place near Johannesburg and set out to shore up the economy, address power shortages and improve governance.
