Johannesburg - Ten South Africans will attempt to break Canadian Suresh Joachim’s Guinness world record of 120 hours and 23 minutes for streaming movies. And the participants are going to try to break the record on Telkom's fibre network.
The telecommunications company announced on Monday that Joachim is also flying to South Africa to try outdo his previous movie watching feat.
The record attempt is planned to happen from 9-13 December at The Sheds @1Fox in downtown Johannesburg.
“I have never been to South Africa and I am particularly excited about visiting the country and competing for the title with the local participants,” said Joachim in a statement.
To break the record, over 80 movies will have to be streamed over Telkom’s fibre internet network. An official Guinness World Records adjudicator will also oversee the attempt.
Telkom’s streaming record attempt comes amid a marketing offensive from the company to drum up interest in its fibre internet services.
Last week, Telkom announced that sprinting world record holder Usain Bolt will market the company's fibre broadband offerings.
Earlier this year, Telkom also said that by 2018 it wants one million homes to access its high-speed network.
The record-themed marketing campaign from Telkom comes amid aggressive competition from independent players such as Vumatel and Fibrehoods, which have been laying fibre broadband infrastructure across suburbs in cities such as Johannesburg.
