Durban - A bank employee has been arrested for his alleged role in an armed robbery in Empangeni which led to the death of a police officer two weeks ago.
Warrant Officer Niren Ramsaroop, 40, was shot in the chest after grappling with armed robbers who had held up a group of women who had withdrawn stokvel money just moments before.
Ramsaroop had been on patrol when he was approached by three women who reported that they had just been robbed of a bag containing over R100 000.
Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said that the bank employee was detained on Friday.
"A bank employee has been arrested for being implicated to the robbery that took place at Empangeni. He is the one who allegedly provided the information to the criminals that two women had just withdrawn a large amount of money and gave the description of the victims to the suspects," he said.
"The suspects then followed the women and robbed them of their stokvel money," Zwane added.
