Charges against ex-Pirates player withdrawn

Johannesburg – The case against former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana player, Steve Lekoelea, was withdrawn on Thursday because of a lack of evidence, police said.

Lekoelea was arrested on Wednesday for fraud and theft during a roadblock in Orange Farm. He was found in possession of a white Polo that had been reported stolen.

Police spokesperson Captain Johannes Motsiri said the former footballer told police he was unaware the Polo had been hijacked.

Lekoelea appeared briefly at the Vereeniging Magistrate's Court earlier on Thursday.
