PICS: Joburg officials take brooms to city streets

Johannesburg - Council officials and board members of waste management company Pikitup took brooms to the streets of Braamfontein on Thursday morning to clean up the area.

Johannesburg Mayor Parks Tau also joined in the clean-up operation at about 07:20.

Some councillors were dressed in green and yellow T-shirts and overalls.

A few metro police officers were monitoring the situation. Two empty police nyalas were also parked next to the Pikitup premises.

This comes a day after Pikitup issued a final warning to South African Municipal Workers' Union (Samwu) members who are participating in an unprotected strike.

Pikitup management said striking workers are required to report for duty in their respective depots at 08:00 on Thursday or they may be fired.

On Tuesday, the company obtained an interim court order barring Samwu members from participating in their strike.
