Task team to probe cash-in-transit heist 'wave'

Durban - A task team has been established to probe a wave of cash-in-transit heists in recent weeks, the latest of which saw an armoured car peppered with gunfire in Limpopo on Monday.

Two independent sources within the security industry, that could not be named to protect their relationships with police, said that on Monday there had been as many as five heists across the country.

In the incident near the Nyl Toll Plaza in Limpopo, a gang of as many as ten men forced the armoured car off the road and riddled it with bullets.

Two of the guards were wounded before the gunmen attempted to blow up the safes holding cash.

It is understood that the gunmen only managed to escape with coins after their attempt at blowing open the safes failed.

It is unclear how much money the thieves escaped with.

The sources said that of the five heists that took place on Monday, two had been in the Western Cape, two took place in Limpopo and the last occurred in Dobsonville, Gauteng.
