Teacher at top Pretoria school quits over sex abuse claims

Pretoria – A teacher at one of Pretoria’s most prestigious schools has quit following sexual abuse allegations, a report said on Monday.

Eyewitness News reported that two St Albans College pupils had come forward with claims a teacher had sexually assaulted them.

The teacher resigned after an internal investigation. Police were investigating the matter.

The boys’ school is one of the most expensive in the country with annual fees rising to R197 000 for 2016.

There have been several similar scandals at schools around the country.

In July, Reddam House Constantia confirmed to News24 it had terminated the contract of an “independent music service provider” following allegations of “inappropriate conduct”.

The former teacher stands accused of fondling at least six boys, aged 9 and 10, during music lessons, according to the Cape Argus.

In June, a group of former Durban High School (DHS) pupils revealed how they had been abused by a prominent maths teacher over a 30-year period, News24 reported.

The group of DHS old boys, who claimed to have been molested by Harold ‘Jiggs’ Gray, had held their silence for months while lobbying the school to apologise for what they calledrampant abuse, and to put in place measures to ensure the safety of present and future pupils.
