Umhlanga shoot-out leaves gunman dead

Durban - A shoot-out at the culmination of a dramatic high-speed chase through Umhlanga has left one gunman dead.

Another has been detained and two others are at large.

According to a police source with knowledge of the incident, who could not be named as he is not authorised to speak to the press, the chase started in Lagoon Drive. The source said an unmarked police field unit vehicle had noticed the suspicious car.

"When [the drivers of the car] realised they were being followed, they fled," he said.

The pursuit saw the suspicious BMW leading police through Umhlanga onto Umhlanga Ridge where it came to a stop at a construction site.

“The suspects fired on police. Officers returned fire, killing one of the men,” the source added.

The man’s bloodied body still lay in the car.

Officers found a stockpile of number plates in the car, thought to be used in the theft of cars.
