Cape Town – All outsourced staff employed at the University of the Western Cape will receive a monthly allowance of R2 000 from December 1, the council said in a statement.
This is one of many agreements taken during a two-day meeting where council considered some of the issues raised by the students and the employees.
Council also condemned the recent acts of violence, vandalism, arson and intimidation that occurred on campus during recent weeks.
Council agreed that the university would issue a concessionary instrument that would provide debt relief for students eligible for UWC’s 2013–2015 National Student Financial Aid Scheme [NSFAS].
Council also said in the medium term it would look at assisting students who were in the “missing middle” - those who fell outside of NSFAS but required financial assistance.
It also approved a motion that in 2016, academically eligible students will not be excluded based on debt.
“There will also be no registration and upfront fees payable by NSFAS-eligible students. The students referred to above as the students in the “missing middle” will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.”
With regards to insourcing, it admitted that this option was unaffordable at this stage.
Council agreed that outsourced staff could further their studies as they would now have access to the same study rebates as for permanent staff for themselves and their children.
Council said it would share the outcomes of its meeting with UWC #FeesWillFall delegation.
