Zuma arrives in Paris for COP

Cape Town - President Jacob Zuma arrived in Paris, France, on Sunday to join the 150 heads of state and government expected to assemble for the 21st Conference of the Parties (COP).

The meeting ahead of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change is expected to be the biggest diplomatic gathering ever organised according to the COP website.

According to the programme also posted on its website, the presidents and heads of state will be received by France's president Francois Hollande and Laurent Fabius, who will be elected COP president when it starts.

Zuma's spokesperson said South Africa has a special interest in doing all it can to ensure the success of the Paris COP.

He will officiate at the Leaders Meeting in Paris in his capacity as President of COP17 and the author and custodian of the historic ''Durban Platform'' - which proposes that a Green Fund be set up.

South Africa is the current chair of the Group of 77, which is a coalition of developing countries. It is also an active member of the Africa Group of Negotiators (AGN).

Minister of Environmental Affairs Edna Molewa is accompanying him.
