Saving time with takeouts

Our editor had an uneasy feeling recently: she realised that her family had had takeout food three times in one week.

Of course, she’s a working mom married to a working dad, so the pressure on their time is immense, but three times in one week exceeded her comfort zone- It’s hard not to feel a little guilty when meals come in a box instead of being the fruit of hours of labour in a hot kitchen.

There are healthy takeout options at most places, so perhaps it’s not that evil. If you’re a parent under pressure, then it allows you to spend more time helping with homework, or having a laugh about all the funny things life throws at you.

Family time around a stove in a cosy kitchen is special, but there’s no need for takeaway guilt, if you do it right.

"Take Out"...??? We live in SOUTH AFRICA, not America... We call it "take aways" here...

Once a week, even then it can be healthy stuff. Some really good fish, Thai, pasta spots. My kids do like a solid Steers burger, chips and a choc milk shake, and why not if they have just been down swimming in the ocean or playing cricket/hockey for an hour. It's all about balance.
