Ashwin has Stiaan's number

Cape Town - Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja continue to make life impossible for the South African batsmen in the current Test series against India.

After the mesmerising spinning duo picked up another wicket each late on Wednesday to leave the Proteas stuttering on 11/2 at stumps on Day 1 of the third Test, their stats look even more impressive than they did going into the match.

Ashwin and Jadeja are now responsible for 26 of the 32 Proteas wickets that have fallen in the series so far - 13 each.

One man who has felt Ashwin's wrath more than anybody else is Proteas opener Stiaan van Zyl, who has now been dismissed by the tall off-spinner in all four of his innings in the series.

Opening the innings, Van Zyl has been dismissed by Ashwin for 5, 10 and 0 while his only resistance came in the first Test when he was shifted down the order, eventually perishing for 36 also at the hands of Ashwin.

Thursday morning will present the Proteas with another opportunity to show their mettle and get back into this series, but Van Zyl will be wondering what more he can do against a man who quite clearly has his number.

Stiaan van Zyl's Test series so far ...

1st Test

5 (23) - lbw b Ashwin

36 (82) - c Rahane b Ashwin

2nd Test

10 (20) - lbw b Ashwin

3rd Test

0 (7) - c Rahane b Ashwin

Series average - 12.75

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
