Kazakhstani boxer Roman Zhailauov will try to prove how good he is when he meets Paul Kamanga – who hails from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) – for the vacant World Boxing Association Pan-African welterweight title.
Their bout takes place at Emperors Palace, Kempton Park, on Tuesday night. It is the headliner of the Golden Gloves bill dubbed Christmas Cracker.
The last time Zhailauov fought at the venue was in September, when he lost by split decision to Thompson Mokwana over eight rounds.
However, Zhailauov’s trainer, Harold “The Hammer” Volbrecht, felt his charge was given a raw deal by the judges.
Three months earlier, Zhailauov had beaten Luyanda Jako by way of a first-round technical knockout at the same venue. In April, he beat Willis Baloyi on points at Emperors.
The fiery Zhailauov will be making his fourth appearance at the entertainment resort.
Volbrecht said his boxer was fired up and confident about winning convincingly.
“My fighter is determined to win by knockout because he was robbed the last time around. He is in great shape and will be crowned the champion,” said Volbrecht.
He said they had trained hard for the fight.
The former Kazakhstani junior champion has had 150 amateur bouts. He has fought most of his professional fights in his home country. He has 15 wins, with nine knockouts, to his credit.
But Kamanga is no slouch and is unbeaten in 17 paid outings.
He last threw punches competitively in a fight against Jason Bedeman, winning on points over 10 rounds at Emperors in September.
Kamanga’s mentor, Anton Gilmore, said his man was primed to win the title.
“He has been training very hard for this clash, which he believes will be the defining moment of his boxing career,” said Gilmore.
There will be five other bouts on the bill.
