Whiteley a late Lions casualty

Johannesburg - Centre Howard Mnisi will captain the Golden Lions in their Currie Cup clash against the EP Kings at Ellis Park on Saturday.

This comes after No 8 Warren Whiteley was withdrawn from the team after straining a calf muscle at training on Thursday.

Whiteley, who returned to the Lions this week after failing to make the final 31-man Springbok Rugby World Cup squad, was initially named as captain but withdrawn shortly after suffering the injury.

Fabian Booysen shifts to No 8, while Kwagga Smith moves into the starting line-up at No 7, with Jano Venter coming in on the bench.

In other changes up front, Malcolm Marx and Julian Redelinghuys will start in the front row, while MB Lusaseni is included at lock.

Additionally, there have been five personnel changes to the Lions backline. Lohan Jacobs will start at scrumhalf, while Jaco van der Walt has been given an opportunity to start at flyhalf.

Anthony Volmink will start at left wing, while Ruan Combrinck shifts to right wing to make space for Andries Coetzee, who returns from injury this week at fullback. Additionally, Stokkies Hanekom will start at outside centre.

The match will get under way at 19:10.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
