17 of the most incredible festivals on the globe

Cape Town - The only thing better than buying your ticket, packing your bags and heading on over the waters to explore a different place, is getting more than you bargained for while abroad.

Like when in Rome, and you stumble across a rock music festival on some ancient piazza, and find yourself singing along to music you don't understand a word of, dancing with strangers.

Although the Colosseum was a stunning sight, and the Spanish steps were truly beautiful (albeit crowded), the fondest memory I have of Rome is certainly not of tossing a coin in the Trevi fountain.

The point I'm trying to make, is that festivals reveal a lot more in a lot less time about a foreign country.

Thus, if you're a smart traveller, why not plan your next adventure in such a way that it coincides with one of these incredible festivals found all over the world.

Rouketopolemos, or Rocket-War, is the name of this unique local traditional event held annually at Easter. In a variation of the Greek habit of throwing fireworks during the celebration of the midnight service before Easter Sunday, two rival church congregations in the town perform a rocket war by firing tens of thousands of home-made rockets across town, with the objective of hitting the other church’s bell tower. The rockets are wooden sticks loaded with an explosive mixture containing gunpowder and launched from grooved platforms.
