Backpacking behind bars - new revamped Aussie prison opens for travellers

Cape Town - The Australians have revamped a 19th century prison, and re-purposed it as a youth hostel in which backpackers can now get a taste of lock-up life.

To make it even better, this site where the Fremantle Prison Youth Hostel Accommodation (YHA) stand marks Western Australia's only World Heritage-listed building!

Now, worldly travellers can spend a night behind bars in the cells previously occupied by hardened criminals.

Although the hostel is only open for business from next week, bookings opened this week, ahead of the official opening of the hostel, following a renovation of the famous institution's Women's Prison, in which the YHA now operates.

Fremantle Prison YHA has all the added comfort of a modern backpacker’s hostel, with a mix of private and shared rooms, WiFi, new facilities - all within the historic prison and its surrounding buildings.

If you’re brave, you can opt to sleep in the actual prison cells!

However, the Fremantle Prison YHA also has an additional purpose-built building with en-suite private rooms for the luxurious backpacker. Restored Victorian-style guards’ cottages are also available.

The World Heritage-listed Fremantle Prison was built in the 1850s with the first convicts occupying it in 1855, all the way up until 1991. The women’s division of the prison is now the Fremantle Prison YHA.

Group Booking is available at Fremantle Prison YHA.

Facilities include air conditioning, parking, television, a cafe restaurant, Internet, games room as well as access for travellers with disabilities.

Other than the prisons of old, guests can escape the lock-up to explore the surroundings. The center of the vibrant port city of Fremantle is situated just a few minutes' walk away from the Fremantle YHA.

You can visit the Maritime Museum, Shipwreck Galleries, take a historic tram ride, watch the spectacular sunset at Fremantle Esplanade, cruise to Rottnest Island, wander the Fishing Boat Harbour for fish and chips and micro breweries, or simply take a tour of the neighbouring Fremantle Prison.

A short train ride to Perth and the stunning Western Australia beaches are also major draw cards.

Fremantle also has a diverse range of night pubs and clubs, micro breweries and comedy bars which are always bustling with happy people.

Rooms in the Fremantle YHA range from about R300 for simple bunk beds in a shared room, to about R1 230 for a family room suitable for four. You can book your stay here
