Cape Town - It is hard to believe that the proud and mighty king of the jungle can be sent running scared, with its tail between its legs.
This was certainly the case when a herd of angry buffalo decided to put its strength in numbers to good use and sent this young lion retreating up a TREE no less.
These pictures, captured in the Maasai Mara by Charles Comyn, a 63-year-old ex-Army official who was exploring the stunning reserve in Kenya with his wife, show the cowardly lion fleeing with a rather terrified look on its hairy face.

The Telegraph reports Comyn said he and his wife had been parked next to a herd of buffalo, with their guide, when all of a sudden a male lion sprang out from its hiding place and made a beeline for a nearby tree as the buffalo started to give chase.
But despite retreating to the unusual safety zone the danger was not yet over as the buffalo – prone to using trampling as a defense mechanism – gathered under the tree to wait for the lion to fall.
The lion slowly started to slip down the tree trunk and was forced to let off a few growls before leaping out of the tree and disappearing into the bush.
Comyn described it as a "hair-tingling moment", saying as the buffalo resumed their early morning grazing, they spotted a newly born calf in the middle of the herd and the reason for their obviously hostile behaviour.
