While it is unclear what has set the elephant off, it is obvious from the footage that the animal is very upset. It does however call into question whether musth is the motivation behind the crazy behaviour.
During musth, elephant bulls produce 40 to 60 times more testosterone than they normally do, which causes aggressive behaviour. It is always recommended that people remain a safe distance from the animals suspected of being in this phase - as the tourists filming the footage have clearly done.
Earlier in September, tourists on board an open safari vehicle (OSV) in the Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe were not so lucky. They got the fright of their lives when a young elephant bull rammed their truck in an aggressive display of territorial rule.
The force of the mammal's impact lifted the OSV into the air and moved it from its tracks until it faced sideways in the road.
