Namaqua flowers will be late bloomers PLUS: 4 best spots to view them

Cape Town - SANParks is expecting the annual natural flower show in the Northern Cape and West Coast to appear a bit later than usual this year, despite good rainfall in the area.

Although they expect the flowers to be late bloomers, the Namaqua National Park officials also say because of the delay the flower show would last a bit longer than usual, given the right conditions.

The Namaqua National Park has experienced good rains over the past two weeks, SANParks said in a press statement

More rain is predicted later this week, but the Namaqua Park officials say they "actually need a few sunny days now to get the plants growing properly".

The whole Namaqua area is lush and green at the moment, and flowers are just starting to show their colour. The Namaqua National Park said in the statement, "the flowers at Skilpad are not flowering yet, but towards Soebatsfontein the vygies in particular are starting to flower".

At the coastal area in the park there are quite a bit of vygies already flowering, particularly Volstruis vygies. This is normal for the Namaqua coastline, where mist adds moisture in addition to any rain.  SANParks warned the coastal section of Namaqua National Park can only be visited with a 4x4 vehicle.
