Cape Town - The best way to enjoy a city or destination is to understand its inner-workings, what makes it 'tick'. If you're coming to Cape Town for the first time, for example, you need to know certain things.
You need to know where the fury of the notorious Cape Doctor is at its worst (so you don't get blown away unexpectedly), you need to know about Cape's Metrorail and where it can take you, and you need to know about the broken connectivity in cellphone reception because of a disruptive piece of rock called Table Mountain.
These are things no local will instantly tell you, yet it's insider info you ought to know.

Take a look at these cool maps, compiled by travel bookings site Travelstart, to get a better understanding of Cape Town. You can also check out more maps here.
1. The mighty South-Easter's path of destruction
While the Cape Doctor clears the Mother City air of all pollution by sweeping it away over the Atlantic ocean, the dust first gathers in the Cape's windiest suburb of Vredehoek. This map shows you how it works.
2. The temperamental cellphone reception
Radio stations in the Mother City will tell you how difficult it is to ensure a seamless stream with Table Mountain - and the other smaller surrounding mountains in the area - in the Mother City's midst. If you don't want to be frustrated because your friends in the southern suburbs can't take your calls from the CBD, consult this map.
3. The fog-horn's eerie cry
Did you know that mist can make sound travel further? This is why Sea Point's fog horn can be heard up to Clifton when the fog comes in. Sea Point dwellers have become accustomed to the wailing sound of the horn, but if you don't want to lay awake on misty nights, consult this map.
4. The super-connected, super-functional MyCiti routes
The MyCiti bus route can take you anywhere from the beaches of Camp's Bay to the outskirts of the West Coast in Melkbosstrand. See which routes will make your Cape Town adventure a traffic-free and convenient one.
You can view the large map here.
5. The highly plausible Cape Town Underground
With all the tunnels and underground walkways that are already available in the Mother City, it's not difficult image the city connected with an underground tube, as outlined on this forward-thinking map. Can somebody get to it already.
6. The underused 'Rail Tourism' Metrorail
Cape Town's trains are relatively reliable and go to some of the coolest tourist attractions around the peninsula. You haven't had the full Cape Town experience if you haven't seen Kalk Bay, Simon's Town and Muizenberg from a train window. Look at this map to see where else the metro can take you.
