Wasted Worldwide, a website comparing drinking habits from around the world, recently conducted a study to see which countries drank the most litres of alcohol per capita.
The results were rather surprising, seeing Russia (which, come on, everyone thought would be in the lead) in a modest fourth position and the top spot taken by a complete wild card.
While South Africa does not make the drunkest list, it is only 2 litres behind number 9, the Czech Republic.
Here are the top 9 drunkest countries, as listed and explained by Matador Network:
9. Czech Republic
Litres per person per year: 13
And apparently the most popular drink is beer, which is also apparently dirt cheap at around $0.70 (R7.99 at R11.41/dollar) a pop.
8. Slovakia
Litres per person per year: 13
Interestingly, a full 16.3% of Slovakians are lifelong teetotallers and 28.6% binge drink.
7. Hungary
Litres per person per year: 13.3
Hungarians admitted to binge drinking at least once a month
6. Andorra
Litres per person per year: 13.8
We bet you've never even heard of Andorra before... well they like to party.
5. Ukraine
Litres per person per year: 13.9
Ukraine is one of the cheapest places to get beer or wine — $4.50 (R50.80) for a bottle of mid-range wine, 67 cents (R7.64) for a half-liter of beer.
4. Russia
Litres per person per year: 15.1
The country is making quite an effort to get its drinking under control, with a 2011 amendment cracking down on the availability and marketing of alcohol as well as the production of illegal booze.
3. Lithuania
Litres per person per year: 15.4
The legal blood alcohol limit for driving is an unusually high 0.04 percent, which may be why nearly 50 percent of road accident deaths are due to booze.
2. Moldova
Litres per person per year: 16.8
While many other countries indulge in softer alcohol types like wine and beer, a full 65% of Moldova's consumption took the form of hard liquor.
1. Belarus
Litres per person per year: 17.5
Sadly, a full 11% of Belarusians, and almost 20% of the men there, have an alcohol dependency.
