Cape Town - An out-of-use oil rig off the south-eastern coast of the Malaysian state of Sabah, now serves a new, more eco-friendly purpose in it being a gateway into the multi-coloured underwater life of the Pacific ocean.
The re-purposed rig hotel, Seaventures Dive Rig Resort, has become a haven for scuba divers keen for a unique holiday exploring the expansive wrecks and reefs next to the tiny Mabul Island, reports Daily Mail.
In the same way the traditional backpackers would typically serve as a platform for surfers to get as close to the waves as possible, this off-shore island of a hotel also offers a direct route to stunning dive sites in the famed Coral Triangle.
The hotel has thus far been a major success, as visitors have ranked it the best hotel in the Pulau Sipadan area on Tripadvisor.
The vibe, much like a backpacker's, looks pretty relaxed, but with a few modern additions one would be happy to find in the hot Malaysian weather (eg. air conditioning).
Prices of packages, which include transport to and from the rig, all meals and snacks and diving courses and expeditions, range from R7 000 for a three to four night stay, to around R10 500 for an all-inclusive week long stay. A non-diving visitor will pay around R920 per night sharing.
The hotel also has a cool feature called the 'Rig Jump' - a platform from which guests can leap into the crystal clear Celebes Sea from a height. Check it out on the video below:
