Cape Town - If there is one thing we know only too well in South Africa, it's the great trek that happens on our national roads at the start and end of any of the school holiday periods.
However, nothing could possibly have prepared us for this mother of all traffic jams that took place after a week-long national holiday in China on Tuesday. Spread across 50 lanes, the gridlock happened on the Beijing–Hong Kong–Macau Expressway, near the Hong Kong border.

And we thought our traffic was bad!
But apparently this isn't even the worst of it when it comes to really, really bad traffic jams in China.
The worst gridlock happened on the 110 Expressway between Beijing and Inner Mongolia in 2010. It lasted 12 days and stretched 96kms, leaving motorists stranded for more than five days.
