Cape Town - Need a breakaway from city life but don’t have the time (or money for fuel) to drive you all the way into the abyss? No need to panic.
The Tour Bay Harbour Market in Hout Bay offers everything from great food, live music, inexpensive drinks and expertly crafted, handmade goods. And the best part? Everything there is locally produced and sourced and the market holds a 'zero waste' policy, too.
Once you’re past the beaches of Camps Bay and Clifton, that city feeling leaves the air. In the small fisherman’s village of Hout Bay, situated just before the iconic Chapman’s Peak drive, you can sit back with a glass of bubbly and indulge in the yummiest market fare this side of the mountain.
MyCiti busses drive all the way, stopping right in front of the Tour Bay Harbour Market, so you can even have a couple of drinks, while listening to the live music - without worrying about the drive home.
The Market is located in an old fish packing warehouse, which was revamped in order to aid new local entrepreneurs to make a living. Once you spend some time at this market, it is clear that the people behind it do indeed have a heart for the local community.
In celebration of tourism month in South Africa, the Tour Bay Harbour Market invited Minister of Tourism, Derek Hanekom, to their possy on Friday the 12th of September. The Minister congratulated the market on being one of the best he’s ever seen in the country, and thanked the entrepreneurs and organisers for their initiative and willingness.
Hanekom commented on how remarkable it is for a huge market like the Tour Bay Harbour Market, to have a ‘zero waste policy’. He called it the “best market by far".
The Lalela Project, a non-profit organization located in Hout Bay, were one of the favourite features on Friday’s event celebrating tourism month. The children from the NGO performed beautiful choir songs for the visitors and even entertained them with impressive kwaito dance moves after their choir event.
