MAP: Heavy snow expected across the Western Cape

Cape Town - Snow has been falling constantly in the higher regions of the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal Drakensberg and Lesotho, with more snow expected to fall in the Western Cape in the next few days.

The first snowfall is expected to hit the higher regions of Western Cape by Wednesday evening, 29 July, Snow Report SA and the South African Weather Service warned.

By midday on Thursday, it is expected that all higher ground and mountainous areas in the Western Cape will have snow.

The snowfall is then expected to move in a north-eastern direction on Thursday, and the falls will start spreading into the Northern and the Eastern Capes once again, covering most of the high ground on the way.

A large band of snowfall stretching from Graaff-Reinet right through to the Eastern Cape Drakensberg is expected.

Regions and passes around Beaufort West and Graaff Reinet will very likely get heavy snowfall, which might cause difficult driving conditions and the closure of certain passes in the area. Travellers are advised to consult alternative routes to reach their destinations over the weekend.

The cold front, along with the snowfall, will continue to move in a north-easterly direction, approaching the weekend and snow-lovers will be in luck with a snowy weekend expected in the Drakensberg highlands at Tiffindell and AfriSki in Lesotho this weekend.
