Cape Town - These days we find ourselves jetting off to all areas of the world on a regular basis. While we know that flying is hazardous to our precious environment, many of us might not know that airlines and airports are now going the extra mile to reduce our carbon emissions.
GB EnergySupply has compiled a guide on how to keep your travels green and make your emissions lighter – consider these five useful tips next time you book your flight
1. Think about the type of aircraft being used by your preferred airline
South Africa’s very own low cost airline Kulula has undertaken a R2,5-billion fleet upgrade with 6 greener Next generation Boeing 737-800’s, ensuring 18% less fuel emissions than before. On Wednesday, 27 August, the airline in fact took delivery of one of these six new Boeings.
South African airline, Mango, was recently rated one of the most on time airlines in the world. Proving once again, that local is always lekker and that you can count on Mango to arrive on time, instead of taxiing your life away.
Lighter luggage also reduces your carbon emissions. Paying the price of overweight luggage is unpleasant enough on its own, but paying the price of excess carbon emissions is sure to be a lot worse.
4. Fly during the day
Day time flying allows the sun’s energy to be reflected onto your airplane’s contrails, reducing the heat and warming caused by carbon emissions.
5. Take the train instead
Using the train is more ideal for closer destinations. It is more scenic and you can hop off at any stop that tickles your fancy, and simply hop back on again. Here in South Africa we have number of luxury train options including Rovos Rail, The Blue Train, the shongololo, the Shosholoza Meyl Premier Class as as well as the Magaliesberg Express.
