Cape Town - Africa's biggest and busiest airport, OR Tambo International Airport has a new leader at the helm.
Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) announced the appointment of Bongiwe Pityi as the new General Manager of OR Tambo International Airport, effective September 1, 2014.
Acsa’s chief executive officer, Bongani Maseko told SAnews.gov.za Pityi was ideally suited to operate the flagship Airport as she has extensive aviation experience.
Pityi was the first manager to be entrusted with the management of Acsa’s parking business in November 2001, based at the then Johannesburg International Airport.
In 2005, she was appointed Assistant General Manager: Durban International Airport before leading and managing the operational transition of the old airport to the new King Shaka International Airport.
Pityi was also the Assistant General Manager at King Shaka International Airport, first appointed in 2010.
The new appointment at OR Tambo follows her post as Deputy Director: Operational Readiness Planning at Guarulhos International Airport, in São Paulo, Brazil, in which Acsa has a stake.
Pityi said she was excited about her new role but also humbled by the fact that she has been appointed to lead Africa’s premier airport.
As she takes over the position, OR Tambo is focusing its efforts on improving service levels as well as heightening operational excellence.
