Cape Town - 22-year-old Mohammed Khelya has some explaining to do to his newlywed wife after he caused an unscheduled divergence of the Thomas Cook flight TCX244 that was supposed to take them on their honeymoon to Cuba.
The flight took off in Manchester, reports Daily Mail, but was diverted to LF Wade International Airport in Bermuda to remove Khelya, before continuing on to Cuba with drunk Khelya's new wife still on board.
Khelya, who's from Blackburn, Lancashire in the UK, had reportedly been drinking a bottle of duty-free vodka before severely arguing with his wife. According to The Telegraph, the new Mrs Khelya changed airplane seats repeatedly to get away from her drunken husband.
After assaulting at least two crew members who tried to help Mrs Khelya move away from her husband, Khelya threatened to kill a crew member. "I'm going to kill you and I'm going to kill everyone after," Khelya told a crew member. According to IOL News, he also spat only other passengers on board.
Khelya was taken in handcuffs to the rear of the aircraft where he was kept until the unscheduled landing in Bermuda was completed.
On the tarmac Khelya was met by a mass of police officers (as seen in the picture above).
He has since been in court where he confessed that he was unable to forgive himself for what he had done. He also said he doesn't know how his new wife will ever forgive him.
The Magistrate in Bermuda, Khamisi Tokunbo, fined Khelya nearly R22 000 for being drunk on the aircraft and another R11 000 for his abusive behavior towards flight staff. If Khelya fails to pay the fines, he faces four months in a Bermuda jail.
