Awkward pics alert! kulula is turning 13 and you’re invited

Cape Town – Can you believe it’s been 13 years since kulula first took to the skies, opening up a whole new realm of budget air travel in South Africa?

To us, it feels like just the other day the infectiously enthusiastic advertisements started infiltrating our television screens and the operatic ‘kulula.com’ jingle rang out across our radio stations.

In no time, gregarious green aircraft started lining up on our runways, bringing bursts of colour to the typically grey-tinged airport exteriors.

Since undertaking its virgin flight between Johannesburg and Cape Town in August 2001, the airline has had its fair share of highs, lows, changes and developments – some of which have made happier customers and others which have bred a bit of discontent (somehow the luggage policy keeps catching people off guard).

But one thing has remained constant: dedication to keeping things light, breezy and full of fun… something we all need more of in our lives, especially when travelling.

In celebration of their 13th birthday, the airline has launched a one-day special on all flights, offering customers a 13% reduced rate (already in effect on their site) for travel between 13 August and 7 July 2015.

They’ve also invited fans to share photos of themselves as awkward teenagers on social media using the hashtag #kulula13 in celebration of their newly acquired adolescence.

Here are a few of our favourites from Twitter:
