The Wall Street Journal reports that the 14 crew members and eight passengers received medical attention immediately after and some were even rushed to hospital on arrival.
The incident took place on an Airbus A380, currently the largest airplane in the airline's fleet.
While modern aircraft are designed to withstand severe weather conditions, it's not always possible for pilots to detect turbulence before finding themselves in the midst of it.
A few rather frightening pics of the aftermath were shared on Twitter, which we're sure will convince you to buckle up next time that seatbelt sign lights up above you on a flight.
