Cape Town – Low cost carrier FlySafair says it will be adjusting schedules on certain low-demand routes for the next few months in order to maintain profitable ticket prices.
The airline said in a statement it would be "releasing some flights between George and Cape Town", in what it calls a flexi-route model in order to “better meet seasonal demand and continue to offer its passengers the lowest airfares”.
Cape Town to George will be affected by the temporary withdrawal from this route from 23 August 2015 and will resume services on 10 December 2015. Elmar Conradie, CEO of FlySafair said the cancellation of its Garden Route connectivity would not be permanent.
“We regret the inconvenience this may cause to passengers who have already booked to fly between George and Cape Town during our withdrawal period, and would like to sincerely apologise to them,” said Conradie.
FlySafair said the flexi model allows the airline to “increase frequency on other routes to meet high demand and allow more people to fly for less”.
“Flights between George and Cape Town are very popular during summer months. The first six months of FlySafair’s operations on those routes saw an increase in demand in excess of 130%. Demand has unfortunately decreased dramatically during the winter months and it does not make business sense for us to continue operations during the winter months if we want to manage our costs and continue to provide our passengers with the lowest fares in the market,” said Conradie.
FlySafair said it would be in touch with affected customers via email and SMS in order to arrange refunds. Passengers affected are being advised to contact the call centre on 087 135 1351 or visit www.flysafair.co.za.
FlySafair said it is in the process of upgrading its Boeing 737-400s to Boeing 737-800s and expects to have eight operating aircraft serving six destinations in time for the December holidays.
