MAP: The world mapped according to frequent flyers

Cape Town - As air travel becomes more accessible, and in certain instances cheaper, it stands to reason that more and more of us have become frequent flyers.

Take a look at this map compiled by the Telegraph according to data published by the World Bank which shows that in South Africa there were a total of 1, 957, 144 flights in 2014 alone.

The leading nation when it comes to the number of flights per year is the US with 9,553, 214 departures from its airports for 2014, followed by China with 3,356,756 flights during the same period.

However the data indicates that China is fast closing the gap since the number of flights in one year is almost six times what it was in the year 2000 (572 924), while departures from the US have fallen slightly from a high of 9, 969, 599 in 2005.

Here are the top 10 countries according to the number of flights in one year:

1. US - 9,553, 214

2. China - 3,356,756

3. Canada -  1,290,420

4. UK - 1,069,420

5. Brazil - 937,437

6. Japan - 927,437

7. Germany - 913, 15

8. Russia - 747,804

9. Turkey - 723,207

10. India - 720,050
