Cape Town - Flights out of Johannesburg have been affected by bad weather on Sunday evening, with knock-on effects for Monday morning.
"OR Tambo's arrival rate, usually 30 aircraft an hour, has been reduced to 25 aircraft an hour due to an airport navigational beacon being affected by heavy rain and an induced power failure," said aviation expert Vincent Lessing.
“All aircraft routing into OR Tambo, from other regional airports, will also experience delays between 08:00 and 13:00 local time,” said Lessing.
Shaun Pozyn, Head of Marketing for kulula confirmed that the flight delays are operational due to the bad weather experienced in Johannesburg and not due to their staff being on strike. Comair staff were issued with a certificate to strike on Thursday 22 January in an ongoing wage dispute.
Irate passengers have taken to social media to voice their irritation with the lengthy delays being experienced and the manner in which local airlines have been dealing with the situation.
It's been almost 4 hours since the flight was supposed to depart. Still no explaination from @kulula
