Cape Town - If you happened to be in the vicinity of Kempton Park on Sunday morning and spotted a Boeing rolling along the R21, it's all okay, there's nothing wrong with your eyes or your mind!
kulula has claimed responsibility for the strange sighting, explaining that they were transporting the old Boeing 737-300 to their operations building for cabin crew training purposes.
In a post on Facebook, the airline stated: "We’re putting an old aircraft to good use to bring you the best crew in the business... We got approval from all the relevant big cheeses to close off the R21 on Sunday for 4 hours."
According to a statement released by Sanral, the plane and the rigging equipment weighed 32 tons and four cranes were required to make the move - a 100 tonner, 200 tonner, a 400 tonner and a 500 tonner.
“There have been only three such moves done worldwide as far as we know,” said Ismail Essa, regional manager of the Northern Region.
Capt Glenn Warden of Comair concurred: ”This is the first time this has been done in this country. To move an entire aircraft across a national highway is a mammoth task and I must say that Sanral have been absolutely fantastic in assisting us in managing traffic on their roads.”
