Cape Town - A shipment of real chili peppers (no, not the rock band, Red Hot Chili Peppers) set off the fire alarm on an transatlantic Air France flight from Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, and caused the plane to make an emergency landing in Ireland.
The crew of the Boeing 747-400 on the Paris bound flight declared an emergency after the alarm went off in the cargo department of the passenger plane, reports Daily Mail. The plane was diverted to Ireland's Shannon Airport where passengers were delayed for several hours.
Emergency crew awaited the plane on the ground, but found no evidence of an actual fire when they opened the cargo department. Instead, emergency workers found that the alarm was set off because of the heat from the peppers!
Apart from the red hot chili peppers, the plane was carrying 142 passengers, 2 pilots and 12 cabin crew. Air France sent an Airbus A320 to collect passengers at Shannon Airport and transport them to Paris.
