Leopard photograph in aid of rhino protection sells for R25 260

Cape Town - A leopard photograph by Beverley Joubert was auctioned off on Tuesday evening, 26 May, for R25 260 in benefit of the rhino protection organisation, Rhinos Without Borders.

The photograph, whose buyer has asked to remain anonymous to the public, depicts a female leopard, Tortillas, as she was at her den watching a group of baboons approaching. Her striking eyes and spots are visible through the dense thicket behind which she camflouged herself and her cub, Legadema.

The photograph is signed and inscribed with the title Eye of the Leopard. It is a limited edition print, which is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Beverley Joubert.

The rhino protection charity, Rhinos without Borders, forms part of The Great Plains Conservation Project and a substantial amount of the proceeds paid for this photograph at the auction will be donated to the charity for the protection of African rhinos.

Rhinos without Borders aims to relocate at least a 100 rhinos from South African to Botswana. A dedicated anti-poaching rhino squad has been established to protect and monitor these animals upon arrival.

The image was shot in the Okavango Delta on Chiefs Island in 2003, during the filming of National Geographic’s Eye of the Leopard, which documents Legadema’s journey to adulthood. The NatGeo Eye of the Leopard series was completed in 2006.

Beverley Joubert is a National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence, just one of 14 people selected to represent this level of professionalism in the Society. She has specialized in African photography for nearly 30 years, with images in a dozen or more National Geographic Magazines, in 10 books, and thousands of articles around the world.

Her work has appeared in over a 100 magazines worldwide and together with her filmmaker husband Derek Joubert, they have been awarded 7 Emmys, the World Ecology Award alongside Prince Charles and Richard Leakey in 2009 and the Presidential Order for meritorious service by the President of Botswana.
