SAA: Baggage backlog cleared through bigger aircraft

Cape Town - South African Airways spokesperson Tlali Tlali says the airline has put urgent measures in place to resolve the baggage backlog that has been experienced on certain routes.

The baggage backlog was caused by space and weight restrictions given the high volumes of baggage SAA carries during this time of the year and not load shedding, Tlali said in an statement.

SAA confirmed that it had cleared the baggage backlog created on Thursday and that it would be deploying bigger aircraft on the affected regional routes which includes Kinshasa, Libreville and Douala.

"At this time of the year and on certain routes, we experience passengers who travel with more baggage than they ordinarily do throughout the year. This means, the baggage pieces we have to carry on the affected routes far outnumber the passengers we must transport,"said Tlali.

"We are faced with a challenge to cater for a much higher demand for baggage space than there is for passenger seats. The situation requires that we employ a balancing act in order to accommodate the interests of our customers across the board, while at the same time ensuring that we conduct business in a manner commercially sound and operationally safe."

SAA also said its Cargo division would be coming on board to assist in accommodating additional baggage that could not be loaded on the passenger aircraft.
