Should the City of Cape Town rename a street after FW de Klerk?

Cape Town - The City of Cape Town is in the process of finalising a renaming proposal for Table Bay Boulevard, the first section of N1 from Cape Town.

The City's naming committee posted the invitation on its website, asking the public to comment on the proposal for renaming Table Bay Boulevard to FW De Klerk Boulevard, saying the motivation to do is due to “De Klerk’s role played in the transition to a new dispensation in South Africa”.

The committee said De Klerk is a Nobel Peace Laureate recipient who has not received any recognition for the role he has played in the recent history of South Africa.

The public have 30 days until 31 October in terms of Section 17 of the Local Government Municipal Systems Act, to indicate support of or objections to the naming proposal.

Comments input and recommendations in respect of the FW De Klerk renaming proposal can be submitted via:

The name change was announced in mid-August, with Former president FW de Klerk saying he was  honoured that the City of Cape Town's naming committee had recommended changing Table Bay Boulevard to his name.

"I would, however, like to stress that this is not an honour that I sought - since in my heart I am not at all sure that, with one or two exceptions, geographic locations should be renamed in honour of living people," De Klerk said in a statement sent through his foundation.

"I would nevertheless be prepared to accept the honour - not on my own behalf but on behalf of all those who supported my efforts while I was president to negotiate a new non-racial constitutional democracy for all our people,"  De Klerk said.
