Cape Town - Have you ever heard the saying, "You're never more alive than when you think you're dead?" Well, this surely is the premise of most extreme, adrenalin-inducing activities ever tried.
Check out this intense shark cage attack video shot by Hillary Rae Petroski from the US, during a recent visit to Mossel Bay along the Garden Route.

Petroski describes the foot of the ferocious 3.5m predator pummelling the cage for more than a minute as the best shark cage attack video - and we have to agree. Uploaded less than three days ago, it had been viewed more than 1.5 million times on YouTube at the time of publishing.
In the description Petroski details the the up close and personal experience, saying “the round buoy attached to the side of the cage was bent in half... Some of the lining of the outside blue barrier bar was bitten through as well.”
Turns out Petroski was enjoying the shark adventure during a one of her days off from volunteering at Cango Wildlife Ranch, also located along the Garden Route.
Petroskis said, “The video was shot with a GoPro Hero 4 wide angle. The shark was even closer than he appears. I apologize for the shakiness..... and my friend's screaming."

So, if you had any doubts about whether the shark would be able to breach the cage, the industry is regulated by the White Shark Protection Foundation (GWSPF).
In 2013 an incident involving a group of Canadian tourists, where a 2.5m great white attempted to ram its head into the viewing gap, saw that particular operator reduce its cage viewing gap by 10%... to 45cm, the lowest in the industry.
At the time the GWSPF chair Kim MacLean said the incident was isolated, the process was safe, and that the divers were not in serious danger.
