Try Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj’s '70s disco diva cat-eye

accreditation
The cat-eye is a classic which dates back to the 1930s. However, the style was redefined in the '70s, as this graphic eye became more prominently - mostly worn by punks.

The punk cat-eye look gave added definition to the eye crease with outrageous and exaggerated flicks.

Fast-forward to this year’s MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), we saw the trend standing out on the red carpet with stars such as, Rita Ora, Demi Lovato, Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj rock the cat eye look effortlessly.

Graphic eyes and nude lips seem to be in girls!

Taylor went for a heavy black liner, completely lining the whole eye, while her former-nemesis, Nicki went for a more subtle, classic cat-eye by showcasing her voluminous lashes and flicking her black liner only onto the upper lid of her eye.

The make-up trend may look simple, but there are so many ways for it to go wrong. According to Hollywood Life, you have to think about your eye shape before pulling it off. You shouldn’t rush when applying pen liquid liner, as the best way to go about it is to go slow.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to get the ultimate cat eye look similar to Taylor and Nicki:

Step 1 – Start at the upper lid, according to preen.me, draw as close to the eye as possible. Depending on your preference, you can either draw thin or thick lines, or even use strokes.

Step 2 – Draw a fine line and make sure you’ve drawn the inner corners of your eye.

Step 3 – Now apply your liner to the bottom lid, however, don't go as bold as with your upper lid.

Step 4 – Create a flick with your eyeliner by drawing a line from the last lash onwards.

Step 5 – To create a darker, deeper look, draw a line back to your upper lash line. This creates a triangle block; then colour-in.

Step 6 – Finish off the look with three strokes of mascara.

Step 7 – You can add colour, say by using plum eyeshadow to make your eye look more smoky and sultry. Apply the colour only on the upper lid, or on the bottom, to get a striking effect.

Tip: Make sure your pen liquid liner dries before going onto the next step.
