Fashion designer, Rick Owens payed homage to Leigh Bowery, a clear reference to the late Australian's birthing outfit, at his recent Paris runway show. Using Bowery as a tribute, Owens showed his models as accessories, and it was a sight to behold. Hung from either the back or the front, models dangled, supported by harnessing straps and hand-holding.
According to the New York Times, his fall collection, called Cyclops, focused on sisterhood, selflessness, motherhood and showcased the friendship and relationships of women.
Women of all forms, shapes and sizes were featured in Owens show, which was set in an underground parking area. Gymnasts and athletes played models, and their strength and endurance were a powerful sight.
This is not the first time the eccentric designer captured headlines, stirring controversy. Earlier this year at the spring menswear show in Paris, his models went full-frontal. This move earned him the hashtag #dickowens; and it was even banned from Instagram since it was too provocative.
However, as bizarre as his shows seem, Rick Owens gets people talking. He goes out of his way to bring across various dynamics and showcases the unorthodox methods that the fashion world is known for.
The metaphorical symbol of power and 'carry your own weight', whilst clad in high fashion clothing, is genius.
I think Owens is starting to become the King of Avant Garde. I mean honestly, who thinks of these things?!
