Why has fashion become so impractical?

accreditation
I’ve often wondered why the fashion industry gets away with what they do.  Designers use underweight models (who do not depict the average woman) to sell clothes at ridiculous prices.  Yet they fill catwalks, magazines and TV with what they think is the norm.

But this isn’t just about designers.  I cannot understand why so much of fashion has become so impractical.  An example is work clothes.

I need to dress a certain way for work and have had to stop shopping at a certain store because their shirts don’t have enough buttons!  Silly thing to moan about except, I’m sick and tired of getting dressed in the mornings and having to wear something under a shirt so that I don’t spend the day flashing my bra.

Who designs corporate clothing like this?  I’m not saying I’d like to wear my shirts like a turtle neck but I’d like a shirt that doesn’t ‘gape’.  I have enough on my to-do list, without worrying about a wardrobe malfunction.

I’ve bought so many items that look great in a changing room and not so good in real life, because in real life people move around and bend over and don’t enjoy baring their chest with the world.

There are so many items of clothing in stores that look stunning on a mannequin but have a closer look and how much of it is actually practical for the everyday?  I saw a stunning navy shirt the other day which upon closer inspection turned out to be transparent.

Yes the mannequin looked great but some of us can’t pull off a Sarah Jessica Parker look in the middle of the week (no offence to the style queen – I adored her outfits in SATC).   I just don’t have time to (after finding a shirt) to go searching for another top to go under it).

Is it a marketing ploy?  Are we spending more because to wear impractical clothing we need to buy more to go with it?

I’m finding it more and more tricky to dress in a trendy but semi-conservative way for the office.  To find clothes that don’t require a broach to close it or don’t need to be covered in a cardigan.  A skirt that is above my knees but not so high that it cannot be worn without thick tights or leggings.  I’d like to be able to go into a shop, buy a shirt and a skirt and wear them just like that.

Why is that so difficult these days?
