What its about:
Doug Harris is a loveable but socially-awkward groom-to-be with a problem: He has no best man. With less than two weeks to go until he marries the girl of his dreams, Doug is referred to Jimmy Callahan, owner and CEO of Best Man, Inc., a company that provides flattering best men for socially challenged grooms. What ensues is a hilarious wedding charade as they try to pull off the Big Con, and an unexpected budding bromance between Doug and his fake best man.
What we thought:
I never thought I would say this about a Kevin Hart film ... The Wedding Ringer is actually very enjoyable.
I bet know one has ever wondered what to do if you’re getting married and have absolutely no friends to stand up for you on that day? It’s a sad, bleak thought. Right?!
That’s the dilemma Doug (Josh Gad) is facing. He has asked the woman of his dreams Gretchen (Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting) to become his wife. But he has one tiny problem, he has absolutely no friends and he needs seven (yes, seven) groomsmen for his big day.
Enter Jimmy Callahan (Kevin Hart) groomsman for hire! Jimmy runs the Best Man Inc a company that specialises in ‘being a best man when you need it the most’. In just a few days Jimmy will attempt to pull off the biggest job of his career, a ‘Golden Tux’ which includes a best man, groomsmen and a bachelor party.
Jimmy hires a set of misfits to pose as Doug’s friends. One of them is Jorge Garcia from Lost fame. The guys go about creating fake stories and fake memories and it doesn’t take long for the friendship to become real.
It’s a bit of The Wedding Crashes, Hitch and Bridesmaids.
The jokes are downright crass, the antics so hard to believe that the ridiculousness of them will have you laughing.
What makes the movie work so well is the chemistry between Gad and Hart. They play off each other so well. The dancing scene between the two of them is by far one of the best parts of the film.
As much as the leads shine in the funny parts they also tap into their sensitive sides during the more touching parts of the movie. And this makes their friendship in the end believable. At the heart of it this movie is friendship and all the nitty grittiness that goes along with it.
The Wedding Ringer is an enjoyable film that is perfect for a bromance date night!
