What it's about:
A suspense thriller played out at 40 000 feet. During a transatlantic flight from New York City to London, U.S. Air Marshal Bill Marks receives a series of cryptic text messages demanding that he instruct the government to transfer $150 million into an offshore account. Until he secures the money, a passenger on his flight will be killed every 20 minutes.
What we thought:
Liam Neeson’s career is having a second wind in his latest movie, Non-Stop, as he proves that he is at the top of his game when it comes to B-grade action flicks. The action thriller is a wild ride filled with twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
A cold rainy dreary day sets the scene. We first meet Bill Marks (Liam Neeson) sitting in his car pouring himself a drink staring at a photograph of a little girl, the telltale signs that this is a troubled man with a tragic past. We soon learn that he is an air marshal who hates flying. He is an alchoholic and has trouble with his superiors. In short he is a flawed hero.
Enter passengers and crew. A frequent flyer Jen Summers (Julianne Moore), a Muslim doctor (Omar Metwally), a somewhat socially awkward nerd (Scoot McNairy ) a New York City policeman (Corey Stoll), the annoying businessman talking on his phone and holding up the line (Nate Parker) and the obligatory unaccompanied minor (Quinn McColgan).
Minutes into the flight Marks receives threatening messages that someone will be killed every 20 minutes until $150 million is transferred into a designated bank account.
In a race against time Marks tries to flush out the bad guy and what follows is a game of whodunit. Everyone is a suspect and the audience is drawn in by Mark’s trying to piece together and suss out who the culprit is. As the clock ticks Marks becomes more desperate and his actions are heavy handed. Things soon go from bad to worse when the bodies start piling up and Marks himself becomes a suspect. The earlier introduction of the type of man Marks is, is the perfect set up for the twist in the plot.
This movie is all about Liam Neeson’s character, a flawed hero he has created a niche for himself playing this type of character and he is really good at it. As the lead he does an amazing job of portraying a man who has been beat down by life. He is essentially a good man who has lost his way and this is his chance to redeem himself.
It all comes to a head in the final minutes of the film when the real action happens; with the military deployed and a ticking bomb on board Neeson turns into a one man fighting machine and he is awesome!
This action movie will keep you entertained, the storyline is engaging and it will keep your attention, the suspense is fuelled by what could be everyone’s worst nightmare of being airborne when disaster strikes.
