Afrikaans singer Fredi Nest dies

Cape Town – Afrikaans singer Fredi Nest died on Friday after a short battle with cancer, reports Netwerk24.

This comes after Nest was admitted to hospital after showing signs of a stroke in May. Tests performed however confirmed that he had two brain tumours, according to Maroela Media. He was immediately admitted to the Steve Biko Academic Hospital for treatement.

The 56-year-old singer, who has released 14 studio albums, is best known for his songs Getoor, Sê My, Meer En Meer, Hey DJ and Bly Net Naby My.

Select Music released the following statement: "We learned with great sadness of the death of our beloved Fredi Nest this morning. He was a giant in the music industry: a singer, songwriter and an inspiration to all of us. Fredi we will miss you, your fire will always burn in our hearts."

Since the news broke, friends and fans have taken to Twitter to pay tribute to Nest.
