‘Bride of Satan’ has SA in a tizz

In the fourth minute of her 13-minute-plus video, Marry the Night, Lady Gaga tells a nurse in an asylum: “I’m gonna be a star...because I have nothing else to lose”.

For some people, this bold statement is further fuel to the fire: Lady Gaga, some claim, has literally sold her soul to the devil in exchange for fame.

On Monday, it was announced that Gaga will be playing two shows in South Africa at the end of the year as part of her Born this Way Ball world tour.

But not everyone is excited to see the multi-award-winning singer on South African soil.

This week, a page called South Africa: No to Lady Gaga and Satanists sprang up on Facebook while some horrified Gaga detractors flooded friends with anonymous broadcast messages on their BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) service.

The BBM message reads, in part: “...Lady Gaga! Real name Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta.

She sold her soul to the devil for fame and fortune, suddenly having 8 million followers on Twitter, top selling artist and the top winner at the Grammys. This is clearly the devil at work!”

The message went on: “Fellow believers in Christ Jesus, you may or may not know the seriousness of what I am saying now. We need to stand firm against the Lady Gaga concert. She is a self-confessed Satanist and the bride of Satan. Letting her into SA will bring spells of evil.”

Four weeks ago, the singer cancelled a show in Jakarta, Indonesia, citing security concerns after protests by religious groups.

More than 50 000 tickets had been sold for the show, and Lady Gaga, who has a penchant for wearing food and prosthetic horns, reportedly said she was “devastated” by the decision.
