The SA Police Service (SAPS) has declared Operation Shanela a resounding success, with over 50 000 arrests made during the recent festive season. This multi-disciplinary approach to crime-fighting saw increased patrols in hotspot areas throughout the country, leading to a significant reduction in criminal activity.

According to the police statement, since the beginning of the festive season on 17 December 2023 until 7 January 2024, SAPS officers have conducted over 61 000 patrols, 3 330 roadblocks and vehicle checkpoints.

These efforts have resulted in the confiscation of 267 illegal firearms, the recovery of 197 stolen and hijacked vehicles and the arrest of individuals for various offences, including:
