Until last Wednesday, South Africans were able to comment on proposed regulations in this regard, which were published in the Government Gazette in March.

The Independent Communications Authority of SA (Icasa) wants to oblige cellphone companies to verify the identity of users of SIM cards with biometric data such as fingerprints and scans of retinas and irises, as well as facial recognition.
