When the 41-year-old single Brian Mokgosi couldn’t find employment, he thought of all he could do to make a living. He sold sweets, snack chips and cakes, but that wasn’t enough.
It was in 2010 when the idea of washing people’s dirty sneakers popped into his mind, and he has not looked back since then. He tells how Covid-19 abruptly destroyed his business growth, leading to total closure for the period.
Brian works from the pavement of his yard on Sebenzisa Drive deep in Kagiso near Krugersdorp. He stays with his brother who works part-time jobs and is currently a grass cutter around the west rand. The two siblings take care of their three nephews.
Brian had saved up some of his profit from washing sneakers and was able to maintain, repair and fix his house.
“Whether it’s R25, R30 or R50, it’s money I work for. No day passes without making some money here,” he says.
