Banyana Banyana star Jermaine Seoposenwe will assume legendary status by reaching the milestone of 100 international caps if she lines up against Tanzania on Tuesday night.

The 30-year-old attacking midfielder scored in her 99th appearance last Friday, when South Africa played Tanzania in the first leg of their penultimate round of CAF Women’s Olympic qualifier in Dar es Salaam.

Banyana will be determined to finish the job in the second leg at the Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga after they won the away leg 3-0.

If Banyana go through to the fourth and final round, they will face nemesis the Super Falcons of Nigeria, who beat Cameroon 1-0 on aggregate.

Nigeria and Cameroon drew 0-0 in the first leg of the qualifier on Friday in Douala. Nigeria won 1-0 in the return leg in Abuja on Monday. Only two African nations will qualify for this year's Paris Olympic Games.

If Seopesenwe plays in the second leg, she will become the 10th Banyana to reach 100 caps.

The Mexico-based star will join Refiloe Jane, Noko Matlou, Nompumelelo Nyandeni, Nothando Vilakazi, Janine van Wyk, Portia Modise, Amanda Dlamini, Mamello Makhabane and Leandra Smeda, who have all achieved this feat.

With 185 caps, former captain and defender Van Wyk, who retired from international football last December, holds the record for most appearances for both the men’s and women’s national teams in Africa.

Banyana coach Desiree Ellis spoke highly of Seoposenwe, saying she has an incredible work ethic and always delivered her absolute best performances.

Ellis said:

I am really excited for Jermaine, she has been a true servant for South African football. She has been giving her all, always.

Ellis earlier warned her players against complacency, despite a 3-0 lead from the first leg. “We have to finish the job back home. People would say 3-0 is already a score that wins you the tie but the next goal in the match could change things. We have to score that next goal. Once that is over, we will have to face whoever is in front of us,” said Ellis.
